Similar to numerous Northern villages of Viet Nam, the rural landscape of Yen Duc village is characterized by verdant paddy fields of gold in harvests, lakes and ponds, orchards and straight rows of arecas under the glistening sun. Yen Duc also preserves various old houses unique to the Vietnamese countryside and their long standing cultural traditions over centuries that still thrive in the local ordinary life. Some old houses span over 100 years, and accommodate up to 3 or 4 generations under. Inside a house is an ancestral altar and a genealogist book of all members of a clan. These houses have spacious gardens of various bonsai species. Joining in growing vegetables and collecting fruits is a fulfilling experience as visitors are allowed to harvest freshest fruits and leaves on their own for their meals. A gardening program is included in village tours that may last at least 5 hours and involve overnight sleep in the village.
More uniquely, visitors can enjoy fishing with the locals or catching fish with baskets. It is not only a good activity but also a window of insights into the local life of peasants. Particularly, the fish stock caught will be made into delicious dishes for the dinner, expected to be ubiquitously Northern. In addition to the sightseeing of the agrarian tranquility of a village and insights into the customs and ordinary life of the locals, visitors will also revel in the quan ho singing and cheo melodies in praise of the country as performed by villagers themselves. A stage of water puppetry is also erected on the village pond, which lies vastly across paddy fields to enable locals with sophisticated performing skills to deliver their playful performance of this culturally rich art genre.
